Glasgow marks the Chinese Lunar New Year 2026 – Year of the Horse
A vibrant display of cultural celebration will be lighting up landmarks across Glasgow, and Scotland, from today as part of a 15-day festival marking the start of the Chinese Lunar New Year, celebrating the Year of the Horse.
The Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of the most important festival events in the Chinese calendar. The annual celebration of the start of the Lunar Year begins 17 February and concludes with the Lantern Festival on 3 March. The Year of the Horse is said to symbolise optimism and opportunity and is often associated with success and good fortune.
The traditional outdoor celebrations next to Glasgow City Chambers will not take place this year due to the ongoing work at George Square. Celebrations in Glasgow City Chambers will take place Sunday 1 March; other Year of the Horse celebrations are also taking place across Glasgow.
Landmarks across the city and beyond including Clyde Arc, Tradeston Bridge, Stockingfield Bridge, The Falkirk Wheel, The Kelpies and Glasgow University will be lit up in red as part of the celebrations.
Catherine Rossine, ng homes Chair said: “We have been delighted to support the Chinese community over many years, sharing its rich culture and celebrations with our local communities and the City of Glasgow.
“ng homes are pleased to support the Chinese New Year celebrations once again. Although the festivities are taking a slightly different shape again this year, it will be wonderful to see the colour, sights and sounds return. Wishing everyone Kung Hei Fat Choi - Happy New Year".
The annual Chinese New Year festival events held in the Glasgow City Chambers is organised by Chinese Cultural and Welfare Society Scotland and supported by Glasgow City Council and a range of partners and supporters.
Andy Chung, Chair (Chinese Cultural and Welfare Society Scotland), said: “I would like to thank Glasgow City Council, ng homes, Arnold Clark, University of Glasgow, Confucius Institute and other supporters for their help in bringing this important event once again in this city where ‘People Make Glasgow’. I would like to extend my sincere thanks also to Scottish Canals for their support in ‘lighting up’ in Red these important landmarks for the start of the new Year celebration on 17th February."
