Denmark named ‘Country of the Year’ for its commitment to organic

Nordic Organic Food Fair has crowned Denmark as its first-ever ‘Country of the Year’. To mark the occasion, Organic Denmark has commissioned a unique sustainable stand concept for its exhibitors and will perform the official opening ceremony at this year’s leading international event, at MalmöMässan, in Sweden on 13-14 November.

Denmark is recognised as being ‘world champions of organic’ with higher consumption of organic than any other country in the world. Nearly 12% of all grocery sales are organic and over half of Danes buy organic at least once a week.

The joined-up partnership-approach, including all stakeholders from government to producer, and involving a range of outstanding initiatives, has helped to build Denmark’s organic credibility both on a national and international scale, says Nordic Organic Food Fair’s event organiser, Diversified Communications UK. These include developments in organic policy, promotion, innovation, and its offering of organic exports.

Denmark’s commitment to food quality, safety and ethics is unprecedented – reflected by the unique government-certified Ø-label, which has played a crucial role in contributing to the widespread success of organic with international buyers at the Nordic Organic Food Fair.

As well as being the country with the highest consumption of certified organic, Denmark has shown commendable dedication and strong government support to organic farmers, producers, retailers and export programmes – and has impressive commitments of doubling organic farming areas, organic exports and consumption by 2030[1].

“We are very proud to be working with Denmark as the first Country of the Year at Nordic Organic Food Fair. Organic Denmark has been a very important partner of the show, since it launched nearly ten years ago. Today, the event is seen as one of the most important in the industry and as a platform that promotes Scandinavia as one of the most forward-thinking regions in the world,” says Carsten Holm, managing director of Diversified Communications UK.

“The ‘Country of the Year’ initiative is a unique celebration of how organic food, drink, beauty and health has grown globally, so we are delighted to be able to celebrate Denmark’s importance in the development, and the future, of organic,” he says.

“It’s a huge honour to be elected as ‘Country of the Year’ at the Nordic Organic Food Fair 2019. For two decades Organic Denmark has been working on expanding and developing the organic food sector as well as Danish organic farming. We try to always stay ahead of our time by responding to current and future demands of consumers and society in general. At this year’s fair, we look forward to presenting our sustainable joint stand and to show an exciting range of Danish organic innovative and high-quality products,” says Helle Borup Friberg, CEO of Organic Denmark.

Shaping the future of food

The Nordic Organic Food Fair annually welcomes thousands of professional buyers, retailers, wholesalers, health store owners, and distributors, and has helped to shape the development of organic food and drink in the region. The show is an important part of the movement towards retailers taking an increasing role in creating a more sustainable future for consumers. The 2019 event also sees the launch of the first Sustainability in Retail Forum, a new annual conference where senior directors in retail will discuss this important subject.
