ADMISSIONS REVIEW IS A MISSED OPPORTUNITY, SAYS NUS

The National Union of Students (NUS) has said that the UCAS Admissions Process Review published today (Wednesday) is a missed opportunity to bring in Post-Qualification Admissions (PQA) that allow students to apply for university once they have received their A-level results and would ensure a level playing field for all applicants.

NUS said that proposals to overhaul the clearing system and improve information, advice and guidance, were welcome.

Liam Burns, NUS President, said:

“This is yet another missed opportunity to grasp the nettle and demonstrate a sustained commitment to post-qualification admission, which is a fairer way for students to apply to university. We lurch from review to review on this issue and it is regrettable that the higher education sector chose only to consider a very specific model of admissions with results in this instance.

“The plan to better managing the clearing process to avoid the annual chaos and stress is welcome, as is a commitment to improved information, advice and guidance throughout the process.

“Overall, the review and consultation presented a window to overhaul the admissions process but the result has been mostly, albeit sensible, tinkering at the edges.”
