NUS WELCOMES ALFIE MEADOWS AND ZAK KING ACQUITTALS

The National Union of Students (NUS) today welcomed the acquittal of Alfie Meadows and Zak King who were charged with violent disorder after joining student protests in 2010.

Dannie Grufferty, NUS Vice-President (Society and Citizenship), said:

“I’m pleased to hear that Alfie and Zak have rightfully been proven innocent of the charges against them. Police intimidation of protesters, including the threat of legal action against peaceful protest is unacceptable.

“Alfie was severely injured during the protest and yet while no-one has been charged over that incident he has faced years of accusations and legal action that has taken a heavy toll on his and his family’s lives.

“Protest is not just a right but a necessity in a functioning democracy and we will continue to work with organisations like Defend The Right To Protest to ensure that right is upheld.”

NUS PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES NATIONAL STUDENT DEMONSTRATION FOR 21 NOVEMBER 2012

In a video message to delegates at the National Union of Students (NUS) Further Education Leadership training event for newly elected officers in colleges and sixth forms, NUS President Liam Burns has announced that NUS is calling on students to march in London on Wednesday 21 November.
