Oxford University Press to launch open access journal in partnership with Project HOPE

The launch of open access journal Health Affairs Scholar will help drive open access publishing and increase the reach of health policy research

Oxford University Press (OUP) is pleased to announce a new agreement with global health and humanitarian relief organization Project HOPE to publish its fully open access journal, Health Affairs Scholar. The new international open access journal will be dedicated to health policy and emerging health services research, in turn, building upon the legacy of Project HOPE’s existing title Health Affairs and supporting OUP’s mission.

Led by Editor-in-Chief Kathryn A. Phillips, Professor of Health Economics and Health Services Research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Health Affairs Scholar will publish core health policy topics including health care costs, access, quality and equity, as shared by a multidisciplinary community of scholars and policy leaders. The journal will also highlight innovative translational research in health care technology, population health, and global health, with the aim of supporting Project HOPE’s work to address the world’s greatest public health challenges, transform lives and uplift communities.

Open access is a key part of how OUP supports its mission to achieve the widest possible dissemination of high-quality research. As a fully open access journal, Health Affairs Scholar will lead the field of health services research in establishing equitable practices, patterns and expectations, and continues the Press’s progress to ensure that open access is available in a sustainable way that supports research publications for their communities.

Speaking about the agreement, Rhodri Jackson, Publishing Director at OUP, said: “We are delighted to be launching Health Affairs Scholar, and are thrilled to partner with Project HOPE on this exciting new venture. We are looking forward to working with Project HOPE to deliver on the journal’s goals on equity, innovation, and global coverage.”

“With Health Affairs Scholar, a journal of emerging and global health policy, this is our first new journal launch in 40 years. We chose Oxford University Press as our partner given its stature in the field, its nonprofit mission alignment, and commitment to equity,” said Jane Hiebert-White, Executive Publisher, Project HOPE.
