A Closer Look At The Cutting Edge Digital Camera On The Sony Xperia S

The Sony Xperia S is arguably the most impressive camera phone currently available. While most high end smartphones pack an 8 megapixel camera, Sony has gone all out with the Xperia S, providing a camera with a whopping 12 million pixel count.

The resolution of this camera stands at 3000x 4000, which equates to 12 million individual pixels. Therefore, the resulting pictures are of outstanding quality, with fine levels of detail and clarity. Such a high resolution camera is ideal for those who like to transfer their pictures on to a computer, where they can crop and/or print them, as when zoomed in or printed the pictures really benefit from the high pixel count. This is because when you zoom into a digital photograph, the pixels will appear bigger. Having such a high pixel density somewhat offsets this, so pictures still look good when zoomed in.

Of course, the camera on the Sony Xperia S is also capable of capturing video footage, and as you may expect this is in various resolution settings, the highest of which is 1080p. This is the highest available video resolution on a smartphone, and because this is full high definition, videos can be streamed to a compatible TV. This can be done either wirelessly via DLNA, or via a USB cable.

The full package of camera features that are found in most other high end smartphone are included, to both improve image quality and simply the task of getting the desired results. Touch focus is included, whereby you can zoom in and out using an onscreen slider. Alternatively, simply enable the autofocus features, where this is done automatically, taking the guesswork out of zooming. Image stabilisations is also included, which is pretty self explanatory. Face & smile detection when enabled, will automatically capture a picture when one or more people are the subject of the photo. This will occur when the software detects that the subjects are all smiling at the same time. The face detection facility helps to zoom to the correct distance. All of these features are the norm on most smartphone released over the last couple of years or so. There is one feature in particular though, that is rather impressive and not found on too many other smartphones. A feature called ‘3D sweep panorama’ allows users to capture a 360 degree image of their surroundings. You simply enable the features, and slowly turn around. It will automatically detect when you have reached 360 degrees, and you will then have a panoramic photo, which is usually reserved for specialist camera equipment.

There is of course much more to the Sony Xperia S than just its camera, but as you can see this is a feature which really sets it apart from the competition. If the camera is an important part of the appeal of a smartphone, I highly recommend the Sony Xperia S; it is arguably the best camera phone currently available. The Sony Xperia U is another great alternative which boasts many similar features at a lower price point.
