Amber Valley Rotary club raises £55,000 to build new outdoor facilities for special needs school

Alfreton Park Community Special School supports pupils from the ages of 2 to 19 who have a range of learning difficulties from severe to profound. Funded entirely by local authorities, the school has now been given the green light to proceed with plans for a brand-new school – one which is fit for purpose and puts the needs of their students at the very heart of its design.

In 2017 Derbyshire County Council (DCC) pledged £12m to build a brand-new school on the existing premises, one which meets the needs of all the pupils and allows them to flourish in a nurturing environment. The new school will incorporate specialist therapy rooms, a pool and adapted classrooms, all of which falls within the budget allocated by DCC.

However, to facilitate a complete overhaul, the school is seeking additional income to provide the full range of facilities that their pupils deserve.

To support the schools wider plans, Amber Valley Rotary club, set in the heart of Derbyshire and within the Derwent Valley, has gone on to raise over £50,000 to support school further, helping the school provide a holistic and collaborative approach to learning that unlocks each pupils potential.

A phenomenal achievement by the rotary club, the money will make a significant difference to the lives of the pupils, and will be used to fund two outdoor gym areas for the new site, to improve pupil’s fitness, but also improve the mobility of physically disabled students.

Neil Vaughan, member of the rotary club comments “The rotary club raised the money with the help of seven other local businesses, including Smith Cooper Independent Financial Services, Tubesheet Ltd, MMD and Garner Holdings, without whom we simply wouldn’t have be able to achieve our target.”

“All of us here at the club are delighted to be able to support such a worthy cause, and we really look forward to seeing the new school develop. The new plans will help to create a secure, welcoming and inclusive learning environment that all staff and pupils deserve, and one which will help the pupils live fulfilled lives.”

In recognition of the club’s tireless efforts to raise such a significant amount, the school held a celebratory dinner on February 25th, to thank the sponsors for their generosity and support.

The school is scheduled to be opened by a member of the Royal Family during spring 2021.
