Post Office details proposed franchise plans for four Directly Managed Branches in partnership with TGJones

The Post Office has today (30 July) provided details on its proposed franchise plans for four Directly Managed Branches which are operated by the Post Office.

As part of its commitment to deliver a ‘New Deal for Postmasters’, the Post Office had previously announced on 8 April that it was moving to a fully franchised network.

Over recent weeks, the Post Office has published the proposed details for a significant number of Directly Managed Branches to be operated from the same premises where they are currently located whilst the long-term arrangements for the branch are finalised. (See notes to editor 1)

Today is the first time the Post Office has published proposed off-site franchise plans for Directly Managed Branches to be operated by TGJones.

Four Post Office Directly Managed Branches – Birmingham, High Street Croydon, St Johns (Leeds) and Stockport – will, subject to consultation, be operated from a nearby TGJones store in the Autumn.

Neil Brocklehurst, CEO at Post Office, said:

“Moving to a fully franchised network is one part of enabling the Post Office to deliver a ‘New Deal for Postmasters’, helping to create a long-term, sustainable future for the Post Office.

“We’re delighted that TGJones want to expand their network of Post Offices and see them as an integral part of their business. We will continue to engage closely about how we can work together as two businesses determined to ensure millions of people each week have access to our vital cash and banking, parcel carrier and foreign exchange services.

“Our proposed franchise plans will mean customers can continue to access the same Post Office products and services at a nearby location whilst at the same time being able to shop for stationary, books, gifts and many other items at the new location helping to support the high street.”

Sean Toal, Chief Executive of TGJones, said:

"We are delighted to be adding further Post Offices to our TGJones stores. We recognise how important postal and banking services are to local communities and have had a long and successful relationship with the Post Office."

Since separating from WHSmith at the end of June 2025, TGJones Chief Executive Sean Toal and his management team have been defining the strategy for the new stand-alone business.

With 464 stores on high streets, in shopping centres and retail parks across the UK as well as a strong online presence, the TGJones brand will soon be part of customers’ everyday experience.

TGJones, which already operates 179 Post Office branches across the UK, has plans to grow its partnership with the Post Office to bring postal and banking services to more of its locations across the UK. Sean Toal and his management team have strong experience of running Post Office branches from their time as senior leaders in WHSmith and have seen how valuable these services are to communities.

Sean Toal has said he believes that TGJones can be the hub of the UK High Street, with Post Office services a key part of the company’s refreshed and compelling offering for customers."
