Stephanie Peacock MP for Barnsley South “cut the ribbon” to mark the official opening of brand-new Pearson Crescent Post Office at Wombwell Convenience Store, 2 Pearson Crescent, Barnsley, S73 8SN.
This was part of a community celebration to mark this special occasion with the Singh family which has run this convenience store for the past 15 years.
This family-run business was started by Datinder Singh and his wife, Ranjit Kaur. Now they work their part-time and their son Gurpreet Singh and his wife Twinklepree Kaur are at the helm.
Last year an extension was added to the store which gave space for Gurpreet to greatly increase the food retail range. A refurbishment of the whole shop also took place including a drinks cave for chilled soft drinks and alcohol.
Gurpreet then successfully applied to add a Post Office to Wombwell Convenience store to the delight of the community.
Stephanie Peacock MP said: “I was delighted to open the Pearson Crescent Post Office, located in Wombwell Convenience Store. Post offices are often the lifeblood of our high streets, and I’m thrilled that Wombwell residents will be able to pop in daily to send and collect parcels or to access vital banking services on behalf of all the major high street banks.
“Wombwell residents know the Singh family well after their dedicated 15 years running the shop, and I’d like to thank them for the investment they made in our area, and for the brilliant new services they will provide to the people of Wombwell.”
Pearson Crescent Post Office is open Monday – Saturday: 8am – 8pm; Sunday: 8am – 6pm, providing 82 hours of Post Office service a week.
Postmaster Gurpreet Singh said: “People are really pleased that we have opened a post office right on their doorstep and with daily opening which makes it really easy to visit. There is also parking outside for up to 20 cars, which also makes it handy for people to drive here as Wombwell Post Office is not currently open.
“This is a family-run business, and we care about our community. We are always looking for ways to improve the shop by enlarging the premises, increasing the retail range and by adding a post office.
Personal and business customers will be able to do their everyday banking. Customers can post letters and parcels, do bill payments, get euros currency, and set up and top up a Post Office Travel Money Card.
At the Post Office we are continually looking to refresh our network and ensure we meet our customer needs and the new branch, known as Pearson Crescent Post Office, will help to serve the community.
Pearson Crescent Post Office is one of our local style branches with a low-screened, open-plan Post Office service point carefully integrated into the retail counter.
The new branch aims to make it easier for people to visit a post office by extending the availability of services in the area.
Tajinder Khehra, Post Office Retail Change Lead, said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for customers to pay their bills, withdraw cash from their bank accounts, and send and collect their mail at a time and place that suits them best. We know how important our services are to customers, and we are confident that this brand-new post office will ensure that people in this area will have easy access to our services.”
