Satellite Club funding available to tackle physical activity gender gap

London Sport has, once again, begun a search for individuals, groups and clubs with the agenda of supporting young girls and women in the capital to boost their participation in sport and physical activity with the release of new Sport England Satellites Clubs funding.

Satellite Clubs are funded by Sport England to provide young people between 14 and 19-years-old with fun, positive experiences which reflect their likes and needs.

London Sport distributes this funding on behalf of Sport England to those helping young people become active or build regular activity habits in physical activity and sport.

This autumn, the funding round focuses on organisations helping girls and young women understand the relevance of physical activity to their own lives and boost their participation levels.

Over the years, Sport England data has shown that efforts to increase female participation levels have begun to bear fruit: the percentage of females completing at least 150 minutes of activity has risen from 59.9% to 60.7% in the last two years.

However, females are still less likely to be involved in physical activity than men (64.7%) so finding new ways to help close this gender gap remains of huge importance.

Lorna Leach, Strategic Relationship Manager for London Sport, said:

“Finding new ways to work with clubs and organisations that meet the needs of the capital’s least active young people is critical to our long-term efforts to make London the most physically active city in the world.

“The Satellite Clubs programme provides an opportunity to help more young Londoners build physical activity habits that will support them throughout their lives.

“By focusing this funding round on projects that work with girls and young women across London, we hope to make new steps towards closing the gender participation gap so that more people in every part of the capital are able to enjoy the benefits of physical activity and sport.”

Expressions of interest for becoming a Satellite Club open today (Tuesday 1 October) and can be made here until the deadline of 23:59 on Thursday 31 October 2019.
