Charity boost as stars come out for Rochdale’s ball

It was an evening of glamour, glitz and raising money for good causes in Rochdale this Saturday as a Masquerade Ball was staged at the town hall.

The evening was a feast for the eye as well as the appetite with guests donning ball gowns, dinner jackets and masks for the glittering event, organised by ‘Number One Riverside – Giving Back’ a new charity set up by council staff to raise money for local causes.

Over 150 guests including Coronation Street stars Kym Marsh and Antony Cotton enjoyed a champagne reception follow followed by a meal, fund-raising silent auction and entertainment in the Great Hall.

Kym was accompanied by her daughter Emilie Cunliffe and both entertained the audience after the meal, singing a collection of sing along pop hits and closing with a moving duet.  Their roof raising performances got a fabulous reception from the appreciative audience.  Surprise guest Antony Cotton, who plays Sean Tully in the ITV1 soap introduced the pair, describing them as “amazing … true stars.”

Pianist Chalce Williams added further sophistication  to the Great Hall, playing a beautiful grand piano
as guests dined, followed by a lively set from rising singing star Ashley Mellon who certainly got the audience on their feet and onto the dancefloor!

Chair of the Charity, Linda Fisher said the event was a big success, raising over £2,400 which will be shared between Springhill Hospice and Women’s Housing Action Group:

“I would like to thank everyone for their support for our first event. We had a fabulous evening and our guests certainly enjoyed themselves. We have raised over £2,400 for Springhill Hospice and Women’s Housing Action Group, local charities who need support. Our star guests made the evening extra special and I would like to thank everyone for giving their time and money to such worthy causes.  I have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity from everyone, not just from people buying tickets but from local businesses contacting us to donate prizes.”

Kirsty Rhodes, Managing Director of Women’s Housing Action Group, a charitable organisation founded in 1981 to offer housing and support to vulnerable women added:

“Thanks to everyone who helped organise this event and to all who attended. The money raised will contribute to maintaining our vital support services … your help is appreciated by everyone, thank you.”

Councillor Robert Clegg, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Springhill Hospice said: “On behalf of Springhill Hospice I would like to say a massive thank you. I know this evening has been arranged in a very short space of time, but it has certainly made a difference.”

The ball was organised by ‘Number One Riverside – Giving Back’ with support from over 25 local businesses including JD Alexander Jewellers, Dolly Birds Beauty Salon, Stage Sound and Light Ltd, Treat Yourself Boutique, Gregory Couzens and Number 10 Gift Shop & Gallery.
