Respects paid to Nelson Mandela
Residents across Rochdale have been paying their respects to Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa. Earlier this week, Rochdale Borough Council opened four books of condolence at locations across the borough for people to leave their comments. The books are available to sign at Rochdale Town Hall, Heywood Library, Middleton Library and Littleborough Library.
The visiting Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, Jack Dromey MP gave his respects to the former South African president. He met Councillors Colin Lambert and Sultan Ali to sign the book of condolence in Rochdale Town Hall.
Mr Dromey wrote “The greatest statesman of the 20th Century. Jailed for 27 years, he forgave his jailors and achieved national reconciliation in his beloved South Africa.”
Cllr Lambert added, “We are living the legacy of peace you laid before your community.”
Cllr Ali simply said “Thank you for the sacrifice you made.”
