Coppercoat: Coppercoat and Clipper Announce New Partnership for 2017/18 Race

Specialist providers of long lasting antifoul, Coppercoat and The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race have announced a partnership for the 2017-18 race.

Coppercoat will be the official antifoul supplier for The Clipper 70 fleet and a partner for the 2017-18 race edition which will start in September 2017.

After the successful application of Coppercoat to race founder Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s yacht, Suhaili, Coppercoat was applied to the first Clipper Race fleet of 68 footers. The collaboration proved highly successful and Coppercoat has once again been selected as the preferred antifouling for the current fleet of 70 footers.

The combination of the solvent-free epoxy resin and the high purity (99%) copper make Coppercoat the strongest copper based antifouling available. Indeed no other continuously exposes as much active copper to unwanted marine life, allowing the underwater surface to withstand the unrelenting attack of such a wide variety of fouling organisms the yachts will encounter in their race around the world.

Application of Coppercoat will have the added benefit of providing even better performance, with less drag from the smooth surface and a long lasting clean hull. Coppercoat has a proven lifespan of at least 10 years providing the Clipper Race fleet with low-maintenance and long term reduced costs. With a Coppercoat application, the yachts will only need to be lifted out of the water once in Australia for a wash down of any residual slime.

The Clipper Race covers 40,000 nautical miles of uncompromising sea conditions, making it the world’s longest ocean race. The Clipper 70 fleet of 12 vessels is the world’s largest matched fleet of ocean racing yachts.

Ewan Clark, director of Coppercoat states: “The partnership with Clipper Race is a fantastic opportunity for Coppercoat. It will allow the yachts to have much more efficiency in the water and will be a long-term and durable solution for antifoul. Coppercoat is looking forward to working with Clipper over the next year ready for the 2017-18 race.”

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, award winning yachtsman and founder of the Clipper Race explains “I am really pleased to welcome Coppercoat as our first ever Official Antifoul Partner. The Clipper Race yachts navigate over 40,000 nautical miles of ocean, and each yacht encounters the full range of Mother Nature’s environment along their journey. We have been very impressed with Coppercoat’s success on our Clipper 68 training fleet and are confident its impressive antifouling technology will help get our Clipper 70s round the world more efficiently.”

Ends / Date: September 2016
