Sodexo Prestige’s Eco Chefs

Whenever there is a decision for Sodexo Prestige to make, however small, we always try to find the best sustainable path which doesn’t impact on quality. These decisions run across all areas of the business and are not always clear cut. Gas cooker vs Electric cooker and china plates vs paper plates are instances where the obvious answer isn’t necessarily the right one. The EkoChef Jacket is unequivocally ‘the right decision’!

Why? Firstly, they’re made from recycled plastic bottles! It takes 25 one-litre PET water bottles to make one EkoChef Jacket. This saves 2.5 tonnes of CO2 per 1,000 jackets compared with standard polyester jackets. Also, there is a huge saving on landfill – 6.7 cubic metres per 1,000 jackets. If you combine this with the 80% reduction in energy required for production, and an overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, this all adds up to a significantly lower environmental impact, which is exactly what we are trying to achieve.

The jackets are made by The Caterers Linen Supply and the company have been hugely innovative in their production of the EkoChef Jacket. The jackets are every bit as good as their conventionally produced predecessors. They’re comfortable, hardwearing enough for life in the kitchen, and look very smart for the client-facing occasions.

Sustainable practice can sometimes require ‘out of the box’ thinking and no better is this illustrated with the EkoChef Jacket. It is this level of innovation that helps continue to drive our Better Tomorrow Plan (Sodexo’s sustainability roadmap to 2020) and we commend everybody from The Caterers Linen Supply on their fantastic product!
