NHS Tayside work with stroke survivors to improve stroke support

John Sapeluk, 66 from Dundee had his stroke in 2018. It affected both his movement and vision, and although he received some physiotherapy in hospital, he had some way to go after coming home. Relearning to do the most basic of tasks was frustrating, and John’s Zimmer frame didn’t seem to give him the support he needed.
John persevered with getting his movement back and has since been able to walk to the end of his street, a small, but important victory.
And now John has joined NHS Tayside Voices to help other people affected by stroke.
NHS Tayside Voices aims to involve people affected by stroke in Tayside to inform health board plans for improving stroke services in their area. Members are invited to review these plans and feedback on their thoughts and ideas. Members are also asked to contribute to publications and materials for people affected by stroke.
John says:
“It’s great that NHS Tayside – with support from charities such as the Stroke Association, has set this up. The voice of Lived Experience is vital to make stroke improvements. I really believe our feedback on ways in which stroke services can improve will better support people like me.”
