Stroke Association statement on Oxfordshire Services

Esme Mutter, Regional Head of Operations for South Central England at the Stroke Association, said:

“We are devastated to learn that Oxfordshire County Council has taken the decision to cut £16,595 from the Stroke Association’s Communication Support Service. This local service has been a lifeline to stroke survivors living with communication difficulties across the county.

“The condition aphasia, which can affect a stroke survivor’s ability to read, write and communicate, is one of the most common consequences of stroke. Without the right support, stroke survivors with communication difficulties can be left feeling isolated. Simple things like sending a text message or buying a newspaper can become a huge challenge.

“The Stroke Association is charity and without this additional funding we will not be able to continue this vital service. We believe everyone should be supported to make the best possible recovery, and this decision will jeopardise the help and support available for vulnerable people who can often struggle to express themselves.

“We want the communication service to continue as part of a full Stroke Recovery Service. We are currently in talks with the council and the Clinical Commissioning Group about funding for the provision of services for stroke survivors in Oxfordshire.”
