Stroke Association statement on the link between air pollution and stroke

Dr Shamim Quadir, Research Communications Manager at the Stroke Association, said: “This study suggests that air pollution is a risk factor contributing to death and disability from stroke across the world, especially in low and middle income countries. However, the analysis also suggested that in high income countries, such as the UK, air pollution was not as significant a risk factor for stroke, and that the number one risk factor for stroke across all regions was having high blood pressure.

“The findings also suggest that the priority in high income countries should be to encourage people to make lifestyle changes, such as stopping smoking, eating a balanced diet and taking regular exercise. We know from previous research that taking these simple steps can help keep your blood pressure under control, and greatly reduce your risk of having a stroke.”
