Stroke Association's statement on thrombectomy to be offered up to 24 hours after onset of stroke

Alexis Kolodziej, Deputy Director of Policy and Influencing at the Stroke Association said:

“We are really pleased that thrombectomy will now be offered up to 24 hours after stroke symptoms start. A bigger window for treatment means it could be a viable option for more patients helping more people to make a better recovery. However, time is still vitally important so this should not be seen as a reason to delay care. When it comes to treating stroke the quicker you act, the more of the person you save so it’s important for anyone suspecting a stroke to still call 999 for urgent medical attention.

“Also, while it’s great news that more people will be eligible for this game-changing treatment, it is currently only offered to 1% of eligible patients. We urgently need more trained professionals and services organised so they can deliver it. We are working with NHS England on the National Stroke Programme which will help address these issues. We also want other parts of the UK to extend the eligibility criteria for thrombectomy and ensure it is available.”
