The online café has been a lifesaver for me.

The online café has been a lifesaver for me.

I had my stroke in September 2015. I was 31 years old at the time.

Looking back, it was hell. I couldn’t walk, dress or wash myself. I was completely reliant on others.

Whilst I have recovered physically, I spend time feeling isolated and alone. No-one really understood the enormity of what I had just experienced. My life had changed in an instant, and although I still had friends, it was more difficult to socialise and meet new people.

Joining the Stroke Association’s online café came at just the right time.

I was a bit nervous joining the first meeting and just listened for a while. As my confidence started to grow, I shared my experience of stroke. People really listened to me, and empathised with what I was saying. Talking so openly about something so personal to me, felt like a load had been taken off my back. The cafes make me feel less alone, and more confident. I would recommend the cafes to anyone affected by stroke, so please come along.
