Gloria Hunniford helps Northern Ireland Make May Purple for Stroke

TV presenter Gloria Hunniford, from Portadown has lent her support to the Stroke Association’s annual awareness month Make May Purple.

During the month of May, the charity is urging everyone to go purple and raise vital funds, to show support for people who have been affected by stroke.

Gloria Hunniford says:

“My family life has been affected enormously by strokes. My father sadly died of a stroke, having had a number of them before the final one. When my husband Stephen had a stroke I fortunately recognised the symptoms quickly and I got him to hospital immediately. He was able to have a clot-busting injection which probably saved his life and definitely prevented long term effects. There are more than 35,000 people in Northern Ireland living with the long term effects of stroke. That's why I am urging you to support The Stroke Association’s Make May Purple campaign, to raise much needed awareness and funds for this marvellous charity supporting survivors and funding vital research.”

During the month of May, thousands of people will put on purple-themed fundraising activities to show their support for people affected by stroke and raise money for essential research into stroke treatment. Across the UK over a million people are rebuilding their lives after stroke and the number of people living with effects of the condition is set to rise.

Barry Macaulay, NI Director,Stroke Association, said: “It’s fantastic to have the support of Gloria to raise awareness of Make May Purple. We hope her support will help us put the spotlight on stroke. “This year we’re calling on the local community to get involved. Whether you choose to hold a bake sale, take part in an event or get sponsored to dye your hair, there are so many easy ways to show your support.

“In Northern Ireland, more than 35,000 local families are rebuilding their lives after stroke. By supporting Make May Purple you can help us to make sure stroke gets the attention it deserves and to raise vital funds for innovative research into stroke care and treatment.”
