Greet man goes the extra mile for the Stroke Association

David Sreeves, 51, from Greet, is taking on a gruelling nine day cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats on Saturday, to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association.

The Deloitte Ride Across Britain (RAB) will see David cycle 969 miles from the most south westerly point of Cornwall to the most north easterly tip of Scotland. David was inspired to take on the challenge after his brother-in-law, Stuart, had a stroke in December 2012, aged just 54.

David said: “Although he is now able to communicate, albeit certainly not as well as he could before, Stuart has now uses a wheelchair and can no longer use his left-hand side. He is unable to stand unaided and has impaired vision. Before his stroke, Stuart was a fit and fun-loving family man in his early 50s. Needless to say the stroke has changed his life and that of his wife, my sister, beyond recognition.”

David is aiming to raise £5,000 in total, and has already raised an impressive £3,000 through a variety of fundraising activities, including spinning outside local supermarkets.

David added: “I want to can show support and help to make a difference. Stuart’s support from the Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Centre in Bromsgrove has been invaluable to his ongoing recovery. I’m a keen cyclist anyway so this event was the perfect opportunity to raise both awareness of stroke and money for such a worthwhile cause.”

Georgina Lawrence, Community and Events Fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said: “With more than 100,000 strokes in the UK each year, it’s vital that we have people like David to help raise funds. We’re incredibly grateful to him for supporting the Stroke Association. The money raised will go a long way in helping to support people who are living with the effects of stroke and their families and carers, as well as help to prevent people from having a stroke.”
