Local mother set to host Craft and Gift Fair for the Stroke Association

A mother of one from Mickelover is hosting a Craft and Gift Fair on Sunday 26 November to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association, after her partner had a mini-stroke.

Amy Heaps, 35, is inviting local residents to join her at Mickleover Court Hotel in Derby, from 10am-3pm. More than 45 stalls will be selling a variety of gifts and crafts, including ladies’ clothing, jewellery, paintings, cards, make-up, rustic wooden designs and flowers.

Amy was inspired to organise the event after her partner, Michael Pratt, 46, had a mini-stroke last year. Fortunately Michael is now taking preventative medication and has made a good recovery. However, three members of his close family have also had strokes.

Amy said: “Because of his family history of strokes, Michael recognised the warning signs and got medical help straight away. His uncle had a stroke the year before, which was very severe, although he has also recovered well. Sadly his other uncle and auntie both had strokes and passed away, so the Stroke Association is a cause that’s extremely close to our hearts. I wanted to organise the Craft and Gift Fair to help other families affected by stroke to get the support they need.

“All the businesses hosting stalls at the fair are from the local area and I’ve worked really hard to make sure there’ll be lots of very special products for sale. I’d encourage everyone from Derby and the surrounding areas to come along to what is shaping up to be a great day.”

Joanne Burr, Community and Events Fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said: “With more than 100,000 strokes in the UK each year, it’s vital we have people like Amy to help raise funds. We’re incredibly grateful to her for fundraising for us; the money raised will go a long way in helping to support others who are living with the effects of stroke, as well as their families and carers.”
