Six Striding for Stroke take on half marathon for the Stroke Association

A Loughborough running team is set to tackle the Ikano Robin Hood Half Marathon on Sunday 27 September 2015 to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association.

The team, named Six Striding for Stroke, was created by Louise Haworth from Loughborough, after both her late parents had strokes. Her mother, Kathleen Parkes, moved to a nursing home after her stroke in 2010, before sadly passing away. Louise’s sister-in-law, Margaret Smerdon, also had a stroke earlier this year.

Louise will be joined by family members Andy Cole, David Haworth, Joe Smerdon, Tom Smerdon and Victoria Pyne to form Six Striding for Stroke. All the team members are related to Margaret and therefore have a close connection to stroke.

Louise said: “We all agreed that raising money for a charity would help keep us motivated throughout the run, and stroke is a cause that’s close to all our hearts. Knowing that the funds we’ll raise for the Stroke Association will help other families affected by stroke to get the support they need will spur us on across the finish line.”

Louise Knight, Community and Events fundraising Manager in the East Midlands, said: “With around 152,000 strokes a year in the UK – that’s one every three and a half minutes – it’s vital that we have the support of people like Louise and her family. The funds raised will help the Stroke Association continue to support stroke survivors and their families across the East Midlands: together we can conquer stroke.”
