Stroke Association response to HSJ's 'Government examines surge in ‘potentially preventable’ deaths'

On Thursday 18th August we were asked by The Telegraph to respond to this article in the HSJ. We said:

Juliet Bouverie OBE, Chief Executive of Stroke Association said: “We understand that the excess deaths analysis is ongoing but we’re concerned by these initial findings. We know people haven't been having their routine appointments for the past few years now, so we’ve been anticipating a rise in strokes for quite a while now. This lack of opportunity to identify risk factors for stroke coupled with increasing ambulance delays is a recipe for increased stroke mortality and disability in those that survive.

“We need to see higher availability and uptake of NHS health checks so that stroke risk factors can be identified, monitored and managed appropriately to reduce everyone’s risk of stroke. Also, further steps need to be taken to mitigate the barriers preventing timely access to stroke treatment, such as ambulance delays.”
