Stroke charity CEO awarded OBE in Queen’s Honours

Juliet Bouverie, Chief Executive of the UK Charity, Stroke Association, has been awarded the Order of the British Empire Medal (OBE) in the Queen’s 2019 New Year’s Honour’s list, for services to stroke survivors.

The award finishes what has already been a significant year for the charity in which stroke was, for the first time, named a national priority in the NHS Long Term Plan, England. The Stroke Association is a UK-wide charity providing specialist support, leading critical research and campaigning for the very best care and support for people affected by stroke.

Juliet has always been passionate about supporting people with life-threatening conditions and spent her early career working at Macmillan Cancer Support, before joining the Stroke Association as CEO, in June 2016.

Juliet knows only too well how devastating the effects of stroke and brain injury can be, having lost her grandmother to a stroke and her late-partner John, to a brain tumour. This is part of her motivation to improve the quality of life for people affected by brain injuries.

Juliet said: "I was incredibly shocked and honoured to be recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List. This is an important milestone in recognising stroke as one of the biggest health challenges of our age.

“The Stroke Association wouldn’t be where it is today without the incredible support of our network of staff, volunteers and the health and social care professionals we work with. It takes a team to rebuild lives after stroke and this award is in recognition of their amazing work, not just mine.

“We have made huge strides in raising awareness of stroke and making stroke the priority that it needs to be. But there is still much more we all need to do to support everyone affected by stroke, working together to improve people’s lives. I am committed to making this happen.”
