Department of Health (National): Statistical press notice: Bed availability and occupancy

The following statistics were released today by the Department of Health:

Bed Availability and Occupancy – Quarter ending 31st March 2011:

The KH03 is a Quarterly collection from all NHS organisations that operate beds, ordinary or daycase, both NHS Trusts and PCTs. It collects the total number of available bed days and the total number of occupied bed days by consultant main specialty. Main findings are:

  • The average daily number of beds open overnight was 141,019 in Quarter 4 2010/11 compared with 140,347 in Quarter 3 2010/11.
  • The average occupancy rate for all beds open overnight was 86.2% in Quarter 4 2010/11 compared with 85.7% in Quarter 3 2010/11.
  • The average daily number of general and acute beds open overnight was 107,670 in Quarter 4 2010/11 compared with 106,829 in Quarter 3 2010/11.
  • The average occupancy rate for general and acute beds open overnight was 88.2% in Quarter 4 2010/11 compared with 87.6% in Quarter 3 2010/11.
  • The average daily number of day only beds was 11,060 in Quarter 4 2010/11 compared with 10,799 in Quarter 3 2010/11.
