Press release -
Highways Agency (National): Roadworks lifted for Late May Bank Holiday weekend
Motorists taking day trips over the coming bank holiday weekend should have an easier journey as the Highways Agency suspends or completes 107 miles of roadworks on motorways and other major roads in England over the Late May Bank Holiday weekend.
Around 74 carriageway miles of works will be completed this week and 33 carriageway miles will be suspended between Friday 27 and May 31, providing extra capacity for bank holiday traffic.
Roads Minister, Mike Penning, said:
"Removing these roadworks will help everyone planning to drive over the bank holiday weekend. More than 98 per cent of the strategic road network will be clear of roadworks, meaning more lanes will be open and many speed restrictions lifted.
"Highways Agency traffic officers will also be on patrol to help clear up any incidents as quickly as possible. And the Highways Agency will continue to provide information on current road conditions through its range of traffic information services to help drivers to plan their journeys."
Live traffic information is provided through the internet, local and national radio travel bulletins, electronic road signs and mobile phone applications.
The Agency is also providing live traffic information for key holiday routes via the Twitter micro-blogging website.
Road users can also call the Highways Agency Information Line (0300 123 5000) to keep up to date with road conditions.
Fifty-one sets of roadworks will be completed ahead of the bank holiday traffic. A further 20 sets of roadworks and lane restrictions will be removed by 06:00 on Friday and will not be put back before 00:01 on Tuesday 31 May. At 25 locations, lane restrictions or temporary speed limits will need to remain in place for the safety of drivers and their passengers. (Full details below and on the Highways Agency website)
Notes to editors
1. The Highways Agency is an executive agency of the Department for Transport. We manage, maintain and improve England’s motorways and trunk roads on behalf of the Secretary of State.
2. Details of the roadworks remaining, lifted and complete are at the foot of this note. You can also view them on a map by following these links...

3. We plan maintenance and improvement projects carefully to allow works to be completed safely, in a cost effective way while keeping disruption to road users to a minimum. We do as much work as possible overnight and when roads are less busy in order to keep more lanes open for road users at peak travel times. Drivers are advised to check their route for road works and allow extra time for their journeys where needed. We have a variety of journey planning tools that road users can use to check travel conditions on the roads we manage, and we will do all we can to keep road users informed.
We lift roadworks where a bank holiday coincides with a school holiday. These occasions are Easter, Late Spring (coincides with half term), Late Summer and Christmas/New Year.
4. Real-time traffic information for England’s motorways and major A roads is available:
- From our Traffic Radio service, available on DAB digital radio and the internet atwww.trafficradio.org.uk To tune into the DAB service, simply press the "scan" button on your radio. The radio will tune into all available channels and you can select the new service by scrolling through the channels until you reach "Traffic Radio".
- From the web at www.highways.gov.uk/traffic or www.highways.gov.uk/mobile if using a phone or mobile device.
Before using any mobile, find a safe place to park. Never stop on the hard shoulder of a motorway except in an emergency. Make sure it’s safe and legal before you call.
5. For more general information about the Highways Agency and its work, visit the Highways Agency website www.highways.gov.uk, or telephone the Highways Agency Information Line on 0300 123 5000 at any time (Calls to 0300 numbers will cost no more than 5p per minute from a standard BT residential landline. Call charges from other landlines and mobile networks may vary, but will be no more than a standard geographic call and will be included in all inclusive minutes and discount schemes).
Safety at roadworks
The Highways Agency is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:
- Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.
- Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.
- Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
- Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
- Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.
- Observe all signs – they are there to help you.

Replacement of M6 viaduct above motorway
Lane closures northbound and hard shoulder closed southbound - 50mph speed limit both ways - 2 miles of roadworks - Slight delays expected.
