Evolve: Kainos Evolve® is System of Choice for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Lancashire becomes Fourth Major NHS Trust to standardise on Kainos’ unique clinician-focused EDM solution, Evolve®

London & Belfast, May 23rd, 2011 – Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a major teaching hospital and one of the largest Trusts in the UK, is to standardise on Kainos Evolve®, in a fourth successive major healthcare project win for the electronic document management (EDM) solutions specialist.

Under the new agreement, estimated to be valued at around £2M, Kainos will work hand-in-hand with Trust clinical and staff teams to deliver an EDM-based Clinical Portal that will deliver significant improvements in flexibility and responsiveness across the Trust; improve information for clinicians, reduce clinical risk and contribute to improved patient care.

“This is a clinician-led business change programme that will revolutionise the way clinicians can use information to improve patient care and outcomes” comments Jan Hodges, Chief Information Officer at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. “Furthermore this initiative will give the Trust greater flexibility and responsiveness in what are uncertain times in the UK health sector.”

To win the contract, Kainos competed with six other shortlisted suppliers during a 10-month evaluation process that involved more than 600 Trust staff. “Kainos impressed us right from the start and at each stage of the procurement process. The Clinical Portal will have such an impact on how we work day to day and shape the future of the Trust that it was essential we had confidence in our delivery partner,” added Jan. “We saw Evolve in operation at Ipswich Hospitals NHS Trust and soaked up their enthusiasm and confidence in the system and in the Kainos team.”

“Kainos know our business,” says Jan. “They connected with our clinicians and other users and demonstrated that they really understood the issues. Evolve has been designed with clinicians in mind and this is evident from the support, buy-in and success that it has had at Ipswich and other Trusts.”

The Lancashire business process re-engineering (BPR) programme is now underway mapping current paper processes to how it will all work in the future as the reliance on paper notes is reduced and eventually eliminated using a combination of Workflow and eForms. The team is embarking on a programme to understand how each speciality works, how the new Clinical Portal will consolidate information from the 100+ specialist clinical systems and how they will access the scanned paper notes.

The Trust has 600,000 patient visits a year across two sites and is setting up its own internal scanning bureau to scan legacy and patient visit case notes. With 1.5 million sets of notes to be scanned, the business change team has huge support from health records, the Trust Board and clinical and nursing staff to embrace a new way of electronic working.

According to Jan, “There is a real sense of excitement about the journey that lies ahead of us and an assured confidence in Kainos as our partner. This will change the way our people work, it will change the culture of the Trust and it will give us the flexibility and responsiveness to address the future of healthcare.”

Deirdre O’Neill is head of the Evolve healthcare division at Kainos and adds, “This is a wonderful endorsement of Evolve and our healthcare team to be awarded this contract by one of the UK’s largest Trusts. We are quietly establishing a strong foothold in the UK healthcare market along with a reputation for understanding healthcare and how IT can transform and improve the working life of healthcare professionals. We are delighted to welcome Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a customer and we look forward to a long standing and successful partnership with them.”
