Maria von Boch on 275 years of Villeroy & Boch “Home is the most important place”

275 Years Creating Homes – this is the slogan for the celebrations to mark Villeroy & Boch’s 275th anniversary this year. Since the company’s creation in 1748, close ties have been forged with the founding families. In this anniversary year, Maria von Boch, a member of the ninth generation of von Bochs, opens her doors and explains her own personal view of the concept of home – and how she designs hers.

Maria von Boch lives with her husband and three children in Mettlach, in the Saarland region, in a cosy Bauhaus-style house with a driveway flanked by two large lime trees. She opens the door with a smile, one hand on the collar of Labrador Emmy. From the living room, an amazing view is revealed of the River Saar and the Old Abbey, Villeroy & Boch’s headquarters.

Fresh flowers and family finds

“Home is the most important place for me,” says Maria von Boch. “The whole family needs to feel comfortable here.” For the perfect atmosphere, she decorates her home with lots of loving details and adds fresh flowers regularly. Arranged in pretty vases or an old art deco bowl from the flea market – by Villeroy & Boch, of course – they add colourful highlights and a subtle scent to the living and dining areas. The walls are painted in a warm beige shade, while light upholstery and solid wooden furniture create a relaxed and homely feel in the rooms. One theme is apparent throughout the entire house: products from the family company. The bathrooms are fitted with items from the successful Subway collection, and even the ceramic kitchen sink comes from Villeroy & Boch.

A combination of old and new

Maria particularly enjoys mixing old and new to create different effects each time – sometimes accompanied by a little wink. “I grew up with the oldest Villeroy & Boch decor, Old Luxembourg, and it is still one of our most successful classics today,” she recalls. The mother of three still has a fondness for classics and heirlooms. She combines them with modern decors and fresh colours: “I enjoy, for example, working with colourful glasses that add a light and lively note to a strict table setting.” She also uses products from the current ranges, including La Boule, the new edition of the iconic “Kugel” designed by Helen von Boch in the seventies.

Her favourite piece, however, is not from the family collection, but a find from a flea market: a painted porcelain chicken egg holder in which Maria von Boch serves fresh eggs for the family breakfast. “The children wanted animals,” she explains, “and my husband felt it was important for them to have a useful purpose.” So chickens and goats were the choice. “We started off with just two goats, now there are six. Rather than maintaining the hillside, they have destroyed half the garden,” laughs Maria, “but we still love having them.”
