ALL EYES ON ANGUS

With Carnoustie hosting the 147th Open and the eagerly anticipated V&A Dundee opening its doors in September, a new video campaign aims to inspire visitors to add Angus to their travel plans.

Angus Council, in partnership with VisitScotland, has created a series of videos, hosted on the Angus destination website, Visit Angus, showcasing the renowned attractions and hidden gems that make a trip to the region so special.

Each video celebrates 48 hrs of wonder, adventure and history in Angus, highlighting the region as the ideal location for breath-taking scenery, mouth-watering food and drink, rich history, exciting adventures and first-class golf experiences.

In the first film, viewers with a thirst for adventure can discover the range of exciting experiences hidden off the beaten track in Angus. From the stunning ruins of the Red Castle and the natural beauty of Glen Clova, to a trip back in time on the Caledonian Railway at Brechin and an exhilarating zip wire ride in Monikie Country Park.

Angus is famous for its rich history and there is no better place to start in the second film than Arbroath Abbey and the Declaration of Arbroath of 1320, which asserted Scotland's independence from England. Viewers are then taken to House of Dun before enjoying a peek at Glamis Castle. The historic attraction is the legendary setting for Shakespeare's Macbeth and the childhood home of HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.

48 hours of wonder aims to shed light on the region’s hidden gems, including the wildlife spectacle of thousands of geese descending on Montrose Basin, teeing off on one of the country’s oldest links golf course at Montrose. The journey then heads to Kirriemuir to pay tributes to local legends, Peter Pan and Bon Scott before stopping at the Gin Bothy to sample some of the region’s best botanical beverages. Viewers are then taken out to sea to discover the Bell Rock Lighthouse before returning to land to sample the culinary delicacy of an Arbroath Smokie.

The final two exciting videos tees up experiences that golf fans can enjoy in Carnoustie Country ahead of The Open at Carnoustie in July. The last time the prestigious competition was held in Carnoustie in 2007, the event attracted 163,000 spectators.

Caroline Warburton, VisitScotland Regional Leadership Director, said: “We are entering an exciting time for tourism in Angus, not only will Carnoustie play host to the 147th Open, the opening of the V&A Dundee, just a few miles away, represents a huge opportunity to attract new visitors to Scotland’s Tay Country. Angus is home to many of the experiences that make Scotland a must-visit destination. It has beautiful landscapes, delicious food and drink, a fascinating history, stunning wildlife and a vibrant culture.

“We’re delighted to have been able to work with Angus Council to create these videos and give viewers just a small taste of what this exciting region has to offer and encourage them to add Angus to their travel plans in the future.”

Merlyn Dunn, Angus Council’s Economic Development Manager said: “Angus is the ideal place to escape for a break. It offers the best of both worlds, with the vibrant city of Dundee on its doorstep as well as stunning beaches and hills, fascinating culture and heritage and delicious local cuisine. So whether it’s an adventure-packed weekend, exploring a host of fascinating historical sites or a round of golf on a championship course, Angus is the perfect getaway. The new series of films produced in partnership with VisitScotland are a brilliant way to showcase the destination and encourage even more people to visit Angus.”
