Music fans 'get lucky' as Nile Rodgers joins the 2014 Ryder Cup Gala Concert line-up

The legend that is Nile Rodgers is the latest name to be announced for The 2014 Ryder Cup Gala Concert taking place on Wednesday 24 September at The SSE Hydro in Glasgow.

The songwriter and co-founder of disco legends Chic will take part in a once in a lifetime collaboration with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) performing hits including ‘Good Times’, ‘Le Freak’, Sister Sledge classic ‘We are Family’ and a very unique version of the Daft Punk chart topper ‘Get Lucky’, which he co-wrote.

Organised by DF Concerts and Events on behalf of VisitScotland, this unmissable and extraordinary event will bring together top names in golf, music and the arts for the first time.  Tickets are on sale now and available from www.ticketmaster.co.uk, www.ticketsoup.com or by calling 08444 999 990 or 0844 395 4000.

With a flavour of The Brits meets The Proms, four of Scotland’s national arts bodies, Scottish Ballet, RSNO, National Theatre of Scotland and Scottish Opera will perform on the same bill for the first time alongside contemporary acts including Nile Rodgers, Jake Bugg, Texas, Amy Macdonald, Twin Atlantic, Nina Nesbitt, Eddi Reader and Midge Ure, creating an evening of unique collaboration and performance pieces that will delight and astound.  Select solo performers will also be backed by a house band led by Mike Stevens, who is musical director for Take That and Gary Barlow and writes with Annie Lennox.

Fresh from her stunning Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony performance, Scottish singer/songwriter Amy Macdonald was announced as part of the Gala Concert line-up last week.

Curated by celebrated Creative Director Kim Gavin, whose portfolio includes the London 2012 Closing Ceremony, Take That Progress Live Tour (2011) and the Concert for Diana (2007), the evening will see flashes of fashion, bespoke short films and never-before-seen live performances that will build the tension and excitement around The 2014 Ryder Cup.  The audience will also be introduced to the European and USA Teams, meeting for the first time live on stage alongside captains, Paul McGinley and Tom Watson.

The Concert is a signature event within the Homecoming Scotland 2014 programme delivered by DF Concerts & events on behalf of VisitScotland.  It will celebrate the start of The 2014 Ryder Cup which returns to Scotland for the first time in more than 40 years and only the second time in its history.  The sporting event will take place on 23-28 September at Gleneagles and is supported by EventScotland, the national events agency and a directorate of VisitScotland, and Ryder Cup Europe.

Kim Gavin, Executive Producer of the show said:

“What’s really exciting about working on this show is the fusion of live music and culture plus I’m a huge sports fan too so this ticks all the boxes. It’s going to be a really special night”.

Geoff Ellis, CEO of DF Concerts & Events said:

This is truly going to be a show that Scotland has never seen before and is as unique as the Ryder Cup event itself. I am absolutely delighted to have announced Nile Rodgers today – it’s a long time career ambition of mine to work with Nile and he brings huge star quality to the show.  This concert is about so much more than one act, it’s all about the collaborations and presentation - I can’t wait to see it all come to life when September rolls around! Golf, music and arts fans alike are in for an incredible evening of entertainment”.

Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland said

“The Ryder Cup is one of the biggest billings in world sport, so we had to ensure this one-off Gala Concert was exceptional in its own right, celebrating the arrival of this spectacular golfing tournament to Scotland in style.

“The Concert features a stellar line-up of artists doing one off collaborations with the RSNO, plus guests will be treated to breathtaking performances from Scottish Opera, the National Theatre of Scotland and Scottish Opera.  What’s more, the entire European and US Ryder Cup teams will be present, introduced on stage by their eminent captains.

“So the stage is set, and the unique warmth of a Glasgow welcome so appreciated by visitors during the Commonwealth Games, will ensure an absolutely unforgettable evening!”

Nile Rodgers is an American musician, composer, arranger, guitarists and one of the most influential music producers in the history of popular music.  As well as his work with Chic, Nile is the man behind hits by Sister Sledge, Madonna, Diana Ross, David Bowie and many more.  His collaboration with the RSNO at the Ryder Cup Gala Concert is a world ‘first’ and is set to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all who attend the event.
