Press release -

New route to Glasgow Airport from Munich

Glasgow Airport has added a new European city to its growing list of destinations, with the announcement of a brand new route to Munich with Lufthansa from summer 2015.

Flights will start on 16 May 2015 and will run once a week until 3 October. The route will have a journey time of two hours and 15 minutes, flying directly to Munich Airport.

The busy Bavarian capital, which is Germany’s third largest city after Berlin and Hamburg, is famed for its annual Oktoberfest – a two week beer and culture festival which attracts millions of tourists during September and October each year. It is also renowned for its 19th century architecture as well as its museums and art galleries.

The announcement of the new route from Glasgow Airport is the latest in a long line of recent route announcements which have included flights to destinations such as Bordeaux, Marrakech, Cuba, Las Vegas and Halifax, Novia Scotia.

The news also follows the arrival of Ryanair at Glasgow Airport, which officially opened a new base in October, serving seven European destinations during winter 2014 and an additional two from next summer.

Francois Bourienne, commercial director at Glasgow Airport, said: “This is yet more fantastic news for Glasgow Airport. We are delighted to offer our customers another top European destination to fly to from next summer, underlining our commitment to providing greater choice.

“Munich is world-renowned for its beautiful 19th century architecture, as well as its annual Oktoberfest celebrations which I’m sure will be a huge draw for our customers.  We are looking forward to working in partnership with Lufthansa to bring more new and exciting destinations to Glasgow.”

Denise Hill, Head of International Marketing at VisitScotland said:

"Bavaria is the single most prosperous region of Germany and this exciting new flight will open up a rich new seam of high spending travellers from our largest European market.  German visitors are independent and adventurous and this new route direct to Glasgow will deliver increased numbers of visitors both to the city itself as well as, using it as a gateway,  to destinations right across the Highlands and the islands of the West.

“We work in partnership with airports across Scotland to improve Scotland's global connectivity and this announcement now sees Glasgow linked not only to the city of Munich, but onward via this major Lufthansa hub to numerous further destinations in Europe and beyond".

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, commented:

"Three years ago Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, together with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, the Honorary German Consul and VisitScotland, supported Glasgow Airport in the bid to secure this new Lufthansa service from Munich to Glasgow, which will operate from summer 2015.

"Germany is already Glasgow's second largest international market  with 51,000 German visitors currently travelling to our city each year and contributing £12 million to the local economy.  Munich is the economic centre of Southern Germany and Lufthansa's new service to Glasgow is expected to bring a mix of both leisure and business visitors to the city and we look forward to working closely with the airline on joint marketing communications activity to ensure that this new route is a huge success."
