Scotland Primed for Outlander debut

VisitScotland has today welcomed the news that Outlander fans in Scotland and the rest of the UK will now be able to watch the big-budget television series on Amazon.

The Sony Pictures Television production, which was filmed in a studio in Cumbernauld and in other Scottish locations including Doune Castle and Culross, will be available on Amazon Prime Instant Video from 26 March.

Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland, said: “We are thrilled that fans here in Scotland and throughout the rest of the UK will soon be able to enjoy Outlander on Amazon Prime. Scotland is the land that inspired Outlander and, as author Diana Gabaldon revealed in an interview with VisitScotland, her stories have not only inspired people to visit this country, but to move here.

We have already seen a real buzz around Outlander and the starring role Scotland plays in the show. I’m sure many viewers who see Scotland at its dazzling best in the series will be encouraged to come here and see the country for themselves.”

Based on the bestselling novels by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander follows the story of Claire Randall (played by Caitriona Balfe), a married English combat nurse from 1945 who, while on her second honeymoon in Inverness, is mysteriously swept back in time to the 18th-century Scottish Highlands. There she meets Jamie (played by Scottish actor Sam Heughan), a chivalrous young warrior, with whom she becomes romantically entwined.

In an online interview with VisitScotland last year, Diana said: “The photography is amazing, not that Scotland by itself isn’t amazing, but the way they’ve photographed it. Ron (Moore, the producer) said from the beginning when he realised that we could film in Scotland – which is what he and I both wanted – that it must be as much a character in the show as any of the actual cast members, and it certainly is. It’s just spectacular.”
