Under The Gaslight - New Video From Willie Dowling
Under The Gaslight is the last track and video to be released from Willie Dowling’s critically acclaimed album of piano-driven songs The Simpleton.
The song was written and recorded in a day largely because Willie was curious to try and stretch some partially dormant skills and write a song from beginning to end at the piano in one session, without going in to the recording studio first.
Willie Dowling comments on the inspiration for the lyrics:
“In a post truth world where social media delivers the headlines and AI manipulates our emotions, none of us can be truly certain if information is 100% reliable, deliberate disinformation, or just plain lies. The message often seems to be: ‘Don't believe your eyes, believe what you're told’. It often feels that on some level we’re all being 'Gaslit’ from all directions.”
He continues:
“This has contributed to a massive breakdown in communication and an enormous polarisation of opinion that has increasingly amplified into a global existential crisis, largely courtesy of an idiot narcissist and his enablers in the USA, with the financial and political backing of a cabal of right wing billionaires world wide who are determined to shape the world to their will.”
The animated video for Under The Gaslight, features an animated Willie Dowling, first created by film director Sam Riddlestone for the song Sadie Goldman, which also features on The Simpleton album.

Willie Dowling is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and producer for his own bands, as well as for other artists and for film and television.
Willie Dowling’s album The Simpleton was released in November 2024, to great critical acclaim.
Willie has toured extensively for the past couple of years. He’s been tour support to Hillbilly Vegas, Cats In Space, The Quireboys and Luke Morley, and also played a number of headline shows across the UK.
Over the years Willie has fronted, written and produced albums for influential rockers The Grip, Honeycrack, Jackdaw4 and The Dowling Poole.
Willie has recorded studio sessions for, and toured with a wide variety of artists including Cats in Space, Luke Morley, Quireboys, Dr Hook, Midge Ure, Hot Chocolate, The Wildhearts, Shane McGowan, Maroon Town, Andy Taylor and numerous acts besides, usually on keyboards, guitars and vocals, along with occasional other instruments.
