Ann Edholm / Tongue on the Tip
Bildmuseet opens two new exhibitions in November; Ann Edholm’s solo exhibition Tongue on the Tip and the group exhibition Design Matters. We proudly welcome you to the press preview of both these exhibitions on Thursday, 14th of November between 10:00-12:00.
Ann Edholm wants her paintings to be experienced as an encounter with a human being, direct and physical. With their defined geometric shapes, they may at first glance seem completely abstract, but Edholm’s imagery is based on human experience and contains cultural and symbolic references. Using oil paint mixed with wax and applied in thin layer upon layer, she imbues her paintings with a physical, corporal materiality.
Bildmuseet is presenting parts of Ann Edholm’s series of large-scale paintings Tongue on the Tip (2003–2011), together with sketches and collages. Some of the paintings are being publicly exhibited here for the first time. The works include interpretations of art history and ancient legends, of Jewish deportations during the Nazi reign, and her mother’s memories of World War II Berlin.
Ann Edholm (b. 1953) lives and works in Nyköping. She was educated at Gerlesborgsskolan and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. She has been professor of painting at the Royal Institute of Art and at the Valand Academy in Gothenburg, as well as visiting professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Umeå University.
Ann Edholm is represented at the Moderna Museet, the Gothenburg Museum of Art and the Public Art Agency Sweden. Since the 1980s, she has had a large number of exhibitions and public commissions. In 1998 she was commissioned by Statens konstråd to create the site-specific work Tango d’amour for Umeå University: five large paintings on canvas placed around the central atrium in the Teacher Education Building. In 2013, her winning proposal for a monumental curtain for one of the great halls of the United Nations Headquarters in New York was brought to life. Ann Edholm received the Swedish Arts Grants Committee's Grand Award 2018.

Welcome by Director Katarina Pierre, after which curators Brita Täljedal and Anders Jansson will introduce the exhibitions through conversations with the artist Ann Edholm, and the designers Jesper Eriksson, Jenny Nordberg, Maurizio Montalti and Aleksi Vesaluoma from Caracara.
