Master's Degree Exhibition from the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts opens at Bildmuseet

Live is Life is the title of this year’s Master’s degree exhibition from Umeå Academy of Fine Arts at Umeå University, Sweden. It will be inaugurated at Bildmuseet on 29 April with an Art Friday event. Welcome to the press preview on Thursday, 28 April from 10–11 am (R.S.V.P). The artists will be there to present their works.

This year’s degree show from the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, Umeå University, presents works by Désirée Burenstrand Schyman, Olga Gniadzik, Oscar Häggström, Susan Karavelli, Therése Lundin, Ellen Macke Alström, Christoffer Mahlknecht, Abdullah Mohammed, Gabriella Novak and Anastasia Savinova, all of whom are graduating from the Master’s Programme in Fine Arts. Curator and principal supervisor is artist Annika Eriksson, a professor at Umeå Academy of Fine Arts.

- The exhibition borrows its title from the 1984 song by Austrian one-hit wonders Opus, says Annika Eriksson. The song has the kind of crazed optimism that characterised that era and appears in retrospect nothing short of idiotic. And yet, Live is Life can well be a strategy to affirm for a new artist.

The degree show Live is Life is the culmination of five years of studying Fine Arts and a period of intensive work, research and discussion. During the Master’s programme, students have developed their artistic practice and explored the history and contemporary social relevance of art and its current themes and status. The exhibition offers an insight into the discourse on contemporary art and studies of its techniques and materials.
