    Press Invitation: Belkis Ayón / Mythologies

    Belkis Ayón (1967–1999) is one of Cuba’s most prominent artists. In the first Nordic presentation of the artist’s work, Bildmuseet presents creative highlights from her brief but intense career, from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. The exhibition opens on Art Friday, 23 March, and will be previewed to the media by arrangement from Monday, 19 May. Welcome!

    Press invitation: Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg / Machine Auguries

    With AI-generated birdsong under an artificial dawn sky, Machine Auguries warns of our infatuation with technology at the expense of nature. In Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg’s immersive sound and light installation, which opens at Bildmuseet on 18 October, the dawn chorus is slowly taken over by synthetic birdsong.

    Swedish Picture Book of the Year / Everybody Eats Everybody

    On 15 March, an exhibition opens with Aron Landahl’s original paintings for Alla äter alla [Everybody Eats Everybody], selected as the year’s best Swedish picture book. The opening will take place during Bildmuseet’s Art Friday with Littfest – Umeå International Literature Festival.

    Elias Crespin's mobile sculptures move slowly and gracefully in intricate, precise formations, seemingly floating freely in the air in a mesmerising exhibition on Bildmuseet’s top floor. Chronomorphosis opens at Bildmuseet on 15 March during Art Friday with Littfest – Umeå International Literature Festival.

    Graphic novel artist Mats Jonsson at Bildmuseet

    Mats Jonsson is one of Sweden's most prominent graphic novel artists. On June 17, Bildmuseet opens an exhibition based on his latest book När vi var samer [When We Were Sami], the first graphic novel to be nominated for the August Prize in the fiction category.     Eva Koťátková /  What Does a Turtle Feel Through the Carapace? 

    Empathy and the ability to understand the situation of others is the theme of Czech artist Eva Koťátková’s exhibition, which opens at Bildmuseet on April 8. The central work is a two-part installation, one of which is shown in the artist’s solo exhibition at Bildmuseet and the other in parallel as part of ARS22 at Kiasma in Helsinki.

    Bouchra Khalili / Stories Within Stories

    Premiere in Europe for Naeem Mohaiemen’s new film about loss and care

    ​Naeem Mohaiemen’s film Jole Dobe Na (Those Wo Do Not Drown) was commissioned by the Yokohama Triennale and Bildmuseet, where it is now being shown for the first time following its premiere in Japan. In the exhibition at Bildmuseet, the new film is presented together with earlier works by the artist.

    Three new exhibitions are installed when Bildmuseet opens its doors: The first retrospective in the Nordics of the acclaimed artist and civil rights activist Faith Ringgold; Larissa Sansours evocative and thought-provoking Heirloom, Denmark's contribution to the Venice Biennale in 2019; and Swedish Picture Book of the Year / Marathon by Karin Cyrén.

    Opening at Bildmuseet: Grada Kilomba / A World of Illusions

    Bildmuseet, Sweden, presents Grada Kilomba’s first solo exhibition in Scandinavia; a trilogy of poetic film installations that use antique dramas to highlight postcolonial issues of racism, gender oppression and violence. The exhibition is the premiere of the third chapter of the trilogy, and the large scale video works are thereby being exhibited together for the very first time.

    Opening at Bildmuseet: Art Across Species and Beings

    The upcoming exhibition at Bildmuseet brings together an outstanding selection of artworks which invite the visitor to rethink the human position in the world.     Creative, provocative and brilliantly versatile, Carl Johan De Geer has been working as an artist, designer, film-maker, photographer, stage designer, cultural journalist, musician and author since the early 1960s. However, he originally wanted to be a textile designer. "The Big Misconception" presents De Geer’s textile work, pattern sketches and photographs from the 1960s to the early 2000s.

    On Friday 17 November, Bildmuseet will open a solo exhibition of the works of artist Do Ho Suh, his first in Scandinavia. The museum’s top floor will be taken up entirely by a large installation of his transparent fabric structures. The exhibition also includes video works and drawings in which the artist explores architecture in various ways as physical and mental spaces.

    On Sunday, Oct 28 at 14:00 Bildmuseet opens an exhibition featuring Henning Larsen Architects, the internationally successful Danish architectural firm whose work with the new Bildmuseet and the School of Architecture at Umeå Arts Campus has left its mark on Umeå. Architects Per Ebbe Hansson and Louis Becker of Henning Larsen Architects are present at the opening.

Her magical visual essays are now presented in an extensive solo show at Bildmuseet, the first comprehensive presentation of her work in the Nordic countries.
