    Prejudices favour neither students nor the IT industry

    The world urgently needs skilled software developers with a holistic perspective. Yet there are many 'he' and few 'she' and 'they' in the industry. “The prejudiced view of computer scientists as a shy white man sitting alone coding in a basement, does not benefit you as a student, the IT industry or society," says Anna Jonsson, responsible for the Civil Engineering Programme in Computing Science.

    The design world turns its gaze towards Umeå

    Umeå Institute of Design’s popular graduation event at the end of May is paired this year with Sweden's largest design competition – Design S - Swedish Design Awards – as it travels to Umeå. For the first time in 40 years, the prestigious event is venturing beyond the nation’s capital.

    Kunskapsveckan will take place November 1-2 at Umeå University. It is a conference for all staff working in primary and secondary education. This year, the conference will be kicked off by the Director General of the World Health Organisation, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who since 2018 is also an honorary doctor at Umeå University.

    Premature children do well in school

    When looking at school grades, researchers did not find any negative effects of being born moderately preterm. Only those born extremely preterm had poorer school grades. But for children born extremely preterm, going to schools in the top decile of school districts made them perform as good as full-term children in an average school district.
