Comparison with paint and varnish

The initial application of any paint or varnish is similarly absorbed into the substrate, but because stains contain lower amounts of binder, the binder from a stain resides mainly below the surface while the pigment remains near the top or at the surface. Stains that employ metallic pigments such as iron oxides usually are more opaque; first because metallic pigments are opaque by nature, but also because the particles of which they consist are much larger than organic pigments and therefore do not penetrate as well. Most wood stains for interior uses (e.g. floors and furniture) require further application of varnish or finish for protection and gloss. Stains are differentiated from varnishes in that the latter has no added color or pigment and is designed to form a surface film. Some products are marketed as a combination of stain and varnish.

Solid Wood Manufacturing

Solid wood can be cut in three styles: flat-sawn, quarter-sawn, and rift-sawn. However, because only one side of the wood is visible on flooring, "quarter-sawn" and "rift-sawn" will have the same appearance.

Many solid woods come with "absorption strips" - grooves cut into the back of the wood that run the length of each plank. They are used to reduce cupping.

After roughening the floor, thoroughly vacuum to remove the dust. It's a good idea to also vacuum the walls, as dust tends to cling there. Go over the floor with a towel dampened in clean water to pick up any remaining dust. Let the floor dry before continuing.

There are two types of traditional sanding. The first is a light sanding where they do the surface and put on a single coat of urethane. It takes 1-2 days and costs about $400 per room. This is also known as screen sanding, grit pad sanding, or re-coating. The 2nd is a full sand out, where they sand away 1/16th to an 1/8th of an inch off your floor and they put on a couple coats of urethane. It takes 4-7 days and costs about $900/room. Our service quality-wise falls right in the middle. We use a process very similar to sanding but with a special non-toxic solution. Then we seal the floor with our own brand of finish. It looks like urethane, lasts likes urethane, and you clean it like urethane. But unlike urethane there is no odor, and it dries in one hour. So we can literally seal your floor with multiple coats in just a few hours. This is why our floors look so good and last so long! Then you can walk right on your floor and put furniture down as soon as we are finished. Best of all, we are about half the price of sanding.

This process involves treating the wood by boiling the log in water at a certain temperature for an allotted amount of time. Then after preparation the wood is peeled by a blade from the outside of the log, and it works its way around the log toward the center, creating a wood veneer. This veneer is then pressed flat with high pressure to make the veneer flat. This style of manufacturing tends to have problems with the wood cupping or curling back to its original shape. This problem is commonly known as "face checking" and is a manufacturing defect. Rotary-peeled engineered hardwoods tend to have a plywood appearance in the grain.
