Nidec Instruments Corporation (“Nidec Instruments” or the “Company”), a Nidec Group company, today announced the launch of a non-contact credit card reader for public transportation settlements designed exclusively for train station turnstiles and bus fare payments. Passengers can simply hold their credit card over the card reader to enjoy smooth barding. This card reader will help the world’s public transportation infrastructure become smarter.

Why this product was developed
Recent years have seen an increase in cashless settlements in North America, Europe, and other overseas markets. Accordingly, in the area of public transportation as well, an “open-loop” method, in which passengers board trains and buses with their credit cards and debit cards instead of purchasing a dedicated IC card or a ticket, is becoming a standard.

This global trend of going cashless is affecting Japan as well, making it urgently necessary to adapt to the worldwide settlement environment amid a rapid increase in inbound tourists to Japan. At present, problems exist such as the difficulty of obtaining uniquely Japanese transportation IC cards and their time-consuming charging process.

1. It fully supports all the six internationally major payment brands.
This product can handle touch settlements (a contactless payment method) of all the internationally well-known payment brands below. With this product, travelers from anywhere in the world (North America, Europe, Asia, etc.) can use public transportation with their regular credit cards.

2. It meets a strict security standard (PCI PTS).
With respect to security, which is a critical aspect in financial transactions, the card reader is certified by PCI PTS (PIN Transaction Security), an international credit security standard. People can safely use this settlement system, which boasts high robustness and data protection capability.

3. Its design is exclusively for public transportation settlements.
Designed to be installed into railway stations’ turnstiles and bus fare collection systems, this card reader boasts high reading speed and durability.
