Dalarna: an amazing destination for fishing throughout the year

Dalarna, in central Sweden, is a paradise for all fishing enthusiasts. We have deep lakes, wide rivers, thrilling ice fishing and small, hidden waterways. There’s something for everyone here, whether you are a beginner or a professional. A warm welcome awaits you when you come for a fishing experience in Dalarna.

Fishing in Dalarna is very wide-ranging and we have everything from trout in the mountain waters to grayling in the wide rivers and smaller streams, lake fishing of every kind and excellent waters for pike and perch. Grövelsjön and Älvdalen are among the better-known fishing destinations in Dalarna, but in the wild rapids and the countless lakes there are excellent conditions for game fishing elsewhere in the region, too.

Several companies offer guided fishing tours and courses. You can choose from a lot of different packages with fishing and accommodation combined for an unforgettable overall experience.

It’s important to keep in mind that you can’t just fish when and where you like in Dalarna - you always need to get a fishing licence first. Children and young people can often go fishing for free if accompanied by a paying adult. There may also be different rules for when you are allowed to fish in the various waters. You can buy your fishing licence online or from one of the local fishing shops or fishing associations.

Three great tips on year-round fishing in Dalarna

  1. Fishing in the wilderness in Dalarna
  2. Top class fishing at Siljansringen
  3. Unique experiences in Fulufjället national park

Fishing in northern Dalarna is generally easily accessible, despite the fact that it is a wilderness zone, often with roads going all the way to or alongside the fishing areas, of which there are very, very many. Älvdalen is about five hours from Stockholm by car.

There are miles and miles of flowing waters here, with huge forests, blue mountains and unspoiled nature. You could suddenly catch sight of a moose, or see a wild trout on the lookout. You can experience the calm of the wilderness as well as the excitement of waiting for a fish to bite.

Anglerman Fishing Adventures offers various kinds of fishing experiences and is visited by people from all over the world. You can try out the excellent fly-fishing here for most of the year, and when the waters freeze over, they offer exciting ice fishing tours as you hunt for the legendary char. With the help of an experienced fishing guide, you’ll have the best conditions for a successful fishing experience, with a trip that’s tailored to your needs.

Älvdalens Fiskecenter organises fly-fishing courses throughout the summer, and has weekend courses for beginners. The equipment and everything else you need for a successful fishing trip are available here, with extra focus on fly fishing.

Dalarna's largest lake, Siljan, and its surrounding lakes are known for their excellent stocks of pike and perch. Siljan Fishing knows where to go and what to do to have the best fishing experience, no matter the season, and offers everything from day trips to weekly and weekend packages, all inclusive.

The beautiful Siljan lake is located in the middle of Dalarna and both the lake and its idyllic surroundings are just a few hours away by train or car from Stockholm.

At Fulufjället national park, you’ll find not only Sweden’s tallest waterfall and the world’s oldest tree. There is also Rösjön lake with Sweden’s most southerly shoal of wild arctic char. You can sleep soundly with a crackling stove in the cabins at Rösjö, or why not hire a glamping tent?

In wintertime at the Rösjö cabins, you can book an exclusive winter fishing package where you can stay in heated, insulated tents out on the lake. Ice fishing for char is a high point of the year. In summertime you can fish from the shore or hire a rowing boat or fishing kayak. Don’t miss the chance to quietly make your way along the mountain streams on the hunt for the elusive char.
