Dalarna, Sweden in miniature

Dalarna means ‘the valleys’ and the province’s varied, unspoiled landscape, stretching from mighty mountains in the north to rolling farmland in the south, makes many refer to the region as ‘Sweden in miniature’. Most visitors appreciate the deep woods and tranquil blue lakes as well as the abundance of activities the nature here has to offer all year round.

Culturally, Dalarna is the most Swedish of Swedish provinces too. The iconic Dala horse originates here and our colourful folk costumes, distinctive folk music and traditional folk painting called ‘kurbits’ have attracted visitors here since the late 19th century. During your stay here you’ll be bound to encounter red cottages, the craft traditions and the exciting industrial and cultural heritage that helped shape Sweden into what the country is today.

Dalarna is also home to many traditional midsummer celebrations. Midsummer is an ancient Swedish tradition paying homage to the summer solstice in the end of June, when the nights are short and light and summer is in full bloom. If you want to experience a truly authentic midsummer celebrated with maypoles, floral garlands, dancing and music Dalarna is the place to be.
