Africa-themed autumn in Stockholm

Fall 2013 has a bit of an African theme in Stockholm. In addition to the major African Masterpieces exhibit in the Skeppsholmen Caverns, the Polar Music Prize was awarded to Senegal’s Youssou N’Dour. Fotografiska is showing two exhibitions: “This must be the place” by South African Pieter Hugo (August 30-December 1, 2013) and “Farming out of Poverty” by photojournalist Marcus Bleasdale, who traveled in Africa (through October 6, 2013).

African Masterpieces in the Skeppsholmen Caverns

After the popular and successful Inca Gold and Terracotta Army exhibitions, next up will be African Masterpieces in the Skeppsholmen Caverns. See some of the world’s most sophisticated historical works of art, and gain a new perspective on African history.

With over 100 sculptures from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries, the Swedish National Museums of World Culture will tell the story of the Ife civilization in Nigeria, one of the world’s most advanced societies for its time. The objects bear witness to an early cosmopolitan center of power in West Africa.

The exhibition presents information about Ife rituals, religion and world concept. In the Caverns, the Swedish National Museums of World Culture present exhibitions in a new, unique way, in which both objects and the environment take center stage.
