Guestnights: Increase in russian visitors in January

In January Stockholm had 597,000 guestnights in the County. It is about the same as during january last year. Looking at the different types of housing, the number of nights spent in hotels are increasing, while fewer chooses camping and hostels.

The largest foreign market for Stockholm is Germany, followed by the UK, USA and Norway. But in January, the Russian market is dominant.

The month of January is an important travel period for the Russian market, and it is therefore encouraging that the number of Russian visitors continues to increase in Stockholm. During January, Stockholm had 18,631 guest nights, which is an increase of 2 percent. Otherwise January a generally weak month in the number of guest nights.

Domestic visitors accounted for nearly three out of four guest nights during the month. Swedish overnight stays rose compared with January 2012, mainly at the hotels in the city of Stockholm. The number of foreign guest nights decreased by 2 percent, largely due to a weak performance for Europe outside the Nordic region.

In 2012, Stockholm had 10.8 million overnight stays, making us one of the largest tourist destinations in Europe. Russia is the tenth largest international market in Stockholm, with 121,000 guest nights in 2012. That compares with the 441,000 German guest nights in the same year.
