Out in the open sea

If you zoom in on Helgeland on the map, the Træna archipelago appears as a dot, 33 nautical miles due west out in the open sea.

The local population lives on 4 of the islands, linked by a sea-going “bus” service. The local express ferry service is a lifeline out here, and also offers a great way for visitors to travel between islands.

Træna has to be one of the most perfect archipelagos for island-hopping! You can use the Træna boat service to get to 5 of the islands. The island of Sanna looks enticing from the more low-lying main island of Husøya, close enough to blow a kiss. Sanna’s distinctive mountaintops can even be glimpsed on the horizon from certain spots on the mainland. They lie on the fringe of the Helgeland coast, where Trænfjorden meets the even wilder open ocean. The mountains were formed amidst violent upheavals of a bygone age.

Summer is a time of endless daylight out here where fjord meets open sea. The perpetually light Nordland summer nights turn you into a night owl, avoiding going to bed and meeting for coffee in the middle of the night. Dare you go swimming so far north? Best of all is when low tide coincides with the sun at its lowest point, in the middle of the night.

You can swim in a bracingly-cold sea awash with the hues of the midnight sun. Afterwards, enjoy the atmosphere of the sauna. Travellers, with or without swimsuits, can share this warm, inviting setting with locals. It’s a great spot for getting up close and personal outside your comfort zone, a place for engaging discussions. Once your body’s warm, it’s beneficial to venture into the sea for a refreshing dip.

This summer, tourists wanting to experience these remote islands on the fringe of the Helge-land coast can take advantage of a longed-for travel offer. From 21 June to 18 August, a new service will be launched with almost daily departures direct to Myken, Selvær, Træna, Lovund and Onøy, from Sandnessjøen and Bodø. You can simply hop on and off the boat as you choose, and stay overnight on Myken or Lovund.
