Did you know this about Arne Jacobsen?

Classic Danish design

Arne Jacobsen is one of the most famous Danish architects and designers. He is the creator of a large number of iconic masterpieces that are not only loved in Denmark, but also in the rest of the world. Arne Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen in 1902 in a bourgeois family. Nothing suggested that he should make a career in the art world, but his interest was awakened when he got a box of watercolors from his teacher at Nærum Kostskole. The watercolor became an interest that followed Arne Jacobsen through his upbringing, as he loved to draw and paint. This interest became the foundation for his choice of education, which became at the Academy of Fine Arts in the 1920s. After the Art Academy, Arne Jacobsen got his breakthrough as an architect. He was involved in designing a number of architectural buildings, which were considered as the entry of the modern lifestyle in Denmark. This was among other things The Bellevue Theater, as we know it today.

A design change

After World War II, Arne Jacobsen's architecture was characterized by being free and more experimental than it had been before. However, this was replaced by a more minimalistic design style during the 1950s. Jacobsen replaced bricks and wood with materials such as glass, steel and aluminum. It was during this particular period that Jacobsen designed a large number of design classics for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.

Arne Jacobsen served as professor of building art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen during the period 1956-1965. He also received a large number of Danish and international awards such as the C.F. Hansen Medal and the Eckersberg Medal.

Arne Jacobsen was an active designer right to his death in 1971. Throughout his life he continued to design and create buildings, furniture and designs that were characterized by a clean, harmonious and balanced expression. His works are considered today as design classics that are simple, functional and exclusive at the same time.
