Fuel your body for race day
Proper nutrition provides the energy and nutrients your body needs to perform at its best. Vitality dietitian Carla Pool shares essential nutrition tips to help runners perform at their best:
Before the Race:
- Eat 2-4 hours before the start and top up with a light snack 1-2 hours prior.
- Choose foods that are: high in carbohydrates, easy to digest and familiar to your body - avoid experimenting on race day
Examples: Oats porridge, fruit smoothie, peeled apple with low-fat yoghurt.
For races under 60 minutes, additional fuel may not be necessary during or after the event.
During the Race:
If needed, opt for:
- Simple, carbohydrate-rich snacks
- Easy-to-digest options
Examples: Bananas, boiled potatoes, small sandwiches.
After the Race:
- Replenish your energy stores with: quality carbohydrates, lean protein and fluids and electrolytes
Examples: Chicken salad roll, tuna crackers with banana, wholewheat toast with peanut butter.
