Green Cargo delivers renewable energy to the world’s largest urban biomass-fired CHP plant

Green Cargo has a long-standing partnership with Stora Enso Bioenergi and Trätåg for transporting biofuel from several locations to combined heat and power (CHP) plants in Sweden. In 2018, Green Cargo will operate from Sveg and from a new loading site in Hällefors to Fortum Värme’s CHP plant in Värtan, the world’s largest such plant in an urban environment.

The first test delivery of a full train load of biofuel from Hällefors to Värtan was completed over November 11–12 and, in terms of loading, transportation and unloading, was completed as planned. The deliveries of biofuel to the residents of Stockholm are sourced from the forests of Bergslagen. Green Cargo coordinates deliveries from several different locations and supplies wagons and containers to meet the customer’s needs.

“We are pleased that our partnership with Stora Enso Bioenergi and Trätåg will continue to develop in 2018 and will contribute to an increase in the share of goods transported by rail. Transporting full train loads for customers that regularly transport large volumes to fixed destinations means we achieve economic, environmentally-friendly solutions,” says Bengt-Åke Johansson, Strategic Sales Executive at Green Cargo.

Stora Enso Bioenergi is Sweden’s largest supplier of wood fuel and operates in southern and central Sweden, where it supplies its customers with renewable fuel that generates heat and energy for homes and industry. Green Cargo will now deliver 20 full train loads of biofuel on behalf of Stora Enso Bioenergi to Fortum Värme’s biomass-fired CHP plant in Värtan over the forthcoming year.
