It’s a demanding task to create a simple, yet precise level of detail. However, if you are up for the task, it will infuse a building with a distinctive character and long lifespan. This is exemplified in one of our most recent residential and commercial projects, the tower building at 4 Møllerveien, where fibrecement meets sheet metal and windows openings in a sharp interplay with an urban feel – all with the aim of marking the entrance to the vibrant district of Vulkan in the centre of Oslo.

Monday morning – and we’re ready to take on Week 3 from our many AART home offices across Scandinavia. Whether we’re gazing out at Oslo’s skyline or on to Aarhus’s private gardens, we’re working closely together (through Skype and Teams) to keep developing exciting new projects and ensuring good progress in our many ongoing collaborations. So, despite being seperated, we’re still pulling together to keep the wheels turning for our clients and business partners, and for society in general, throughout these unusual times.

We are pleased to announce that our transformation of the more than 100-year-old N. J. Fjordsgade School is in the running for RENOVER prisen, which honours Denmark's best building renovation. With deep respect for its period architecture, we have turned the building worthy of preservation into a diverse community centre where people of all ages can meet and do everything from yoga, boxing and e-sports to learning creative subjects, language and music. Soon to be completed. We are designing a new residential and commercial building in the centre of Oslo. Located at 25 Hagegata in the vibrant district of Tøyen, the combined four- and eight-storey building will optimise the available daylight, since all apartments will have access to balconies and roof gardens. In addition, a bakery (or other public functions) will infuse life into, not only the ground floor, but also the square in front of the building, making it much more than the parking space it is today. Moreover, this square is closely linked to the main square in Tøyen. Thus, buildings like this can become a catalyst for the future development of Tøyen by linking different parts of the district to the main square and further developing the district's existing qualities. We are designing the building for APT Properties.

Sydhavnskvarteret / The South Harbour District - Creating urban life before buildings.
The fundamental idea is to create life in the district before designing any building and allowing the urban life to grow from the bottom up. This creates a solid foundation for further developing the already diverse area, which is packed with enthusiasm and creativity.

This week, Morten Hove Lasthein, head of AART Designers, was invited to speak on the Danish radio show, 'Kulturen på P1'. There, he gave insights into the design of the iconic streetlamps designed by Copenhagen’s city architect in the 1970s and pointed out how they have become an interior trend in today’s homes.

From the historical streetlamps, he drew lines to contemporary streetlamp design such as Sky and Peak, which he designed together with Focus Lighting, and which, today, light up streets throughout Scandinavia – from Aarhus to Copenhagen and Stockholm.

If you would like to be ‘enlightened’, then check out the interview 28 minutes into the radio show, which aired last Wednesday, March 11. Happy listening!

We are keeping a close eye on the recommendations from the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish authorities, so that we as a Scandinavian company can contribute as much as possible to reducing the spread of the coronavirus, COVID-19. In the light of recent developments, we have initiated a number of initiatives.

As of today, we have established home workplaces for all our employees in Aarhus, Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. We have done this to reduce the risk of spreading infection, while ensuring efficient progress in the many projects to which we are contributing across the Scandinavian countries.

Our employees are fully contactable by e-mail and telephone for our clients and business partners. In addition, we will hold all agreed meetings via Skype, to maintain efficient progress and good communication in all our collaborations.

After seven years of dedicated teamwork together with Sweco, it is a privilege to hand over our design of the updated Kungälvs sjukhus near Gothenburg, Sweden, and to see it come to life and make a difference for the people – both the patients and staff – for whom it’s all about.
The updated hospital offers a wide range of new facilities, including a new main entrance, a new connecting building and two new bed ward buildings, totalling 30,000 square metres. The first of the two bed ward buildings and the connecting building have now been commissioned, and we are looking forward to the end of 2020 when the rest of the work will be inaugurated and taking into use.

We have been looking forward to sharing this news: Soon, we will start realizing the new Viking Age Museum in Oslo! Last Friday, the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research commissioned Statsbygg to start the detailed project design and undertake the subsequent construction phase of what will become the world’s leading museum and research institution on the Viking Age. As architect on the project, we look forward to taking on the next phase and translating the vision into an amazing venue, giving visitors the opportunity to take a journey through the world of the Vikings and to see the world’s oldest and best preserved Viking ships from a new and broader perspective.
