​Never Waste a Good Crisis. New TED Talk on Place Branding in Greece.

Stockholm based brand expert Julian Stubbs has been invited to give a TED talk in Greece on possible solutions for Greece from a Place Branding perspective. Stubbs, who is English but lives in Sweden, is the person behind the branding of Stockholm, as The Capital of Scandinavia.

His speech will start with talking about the crisis and how Greece should seize the opportunity of the crisis to find a new direction and opportunities. He will illustrate his speech with examples from other cities such as New York, Barcelona and Stockholm, as places whose strategies were developed during a downturn or crisis.

The talk will cover what he calls ‘The Hammock Theory’ the possibility that nowadays many people can base themselves and live wherever they want due to their ability to work through the cloud as independent workers. It is estimated in the US alone that over 50 million people are classified as independent workers, which is a third of the total US working population. Cities, municipalities and countries have an new opportunity to attract this new breed of independent worker and turn them into new tax payers.

Stubbs said: Places such as Heraklion and Greece could benefit enormously from attracting this new breed of mobile, cloud based, creative class. Places need to examine their assets and consider what it takes to attract this new breed of worker.

Stubbs is currently working with several Swedish municipalities and an international assignment for Holland branding. He is Founder of UP THERE, EVERYWHERE the global cloud based agency which now has over 200 hundred independent contractors around the world, working in one organisation with common tools and processes. The company was recently featured on the NASDAQ.com site as a company to watch. 

The speech is being held Saturday February 28th in Heraklion, Crete. Other speakers include Konstantinos Laskaris, Head of Research and Design of electrical motors at Tesla Motors California, and Dr. Beverly Goodman, a renowned geo-archaeologist.
